ENDURANCE

Perched on this hill in the Narrows away from the water stands a tall tree that has always looked the same, swaying with the wind but never breaking, losing its leaves only to grow back even fuller.

There are certain trees, rocks, and cascades in the Narrows that seem to take on lives of their own, perhaps none more than this one.  It sits on a hill around a common bend in the river and is easily missed, not due to its obscurity but due to the fact that it blends in seamlessly with all the beautiful distractions in this amazing place.  Against a moss covered wall reflecting the cool light of the morning, I find this tree to be a symbol of the trials and tribulations of life.  Despite the ravages of flash floods which reshape the Narrows year after year, this tree sits above the water level, untouched by the violence of nature.
